Article 30 – The Right of Assembly, Demonstration and Petition
"(1) Everyone has the right to assemble and to demonstrate together with others peaceably and unarmed, and to petition."
"አንቀጽ 30 – የመሰብሰብ、 የሰላማዊ ሰልፍ እና የአቤቱታ መብት"
What is a Petition?
A petition is a formal written request or demand addressed to the government, authorities, parliament, or other responsible bodies. It allows citizens to express their concerns, demand justice, or call for change on specific issues. By collecting signatures, a petition shows how many people support a particular cause. It is a peaceful and legitimate tool to make the voices of Ethiopians heard.
What is a Petition for? How does it help?
- It creates public awareness about important issues (human rights, religious freedom, protection of civilians in conflict zones, justice, peace, etc.).
- It builds pressure on decision-makers.
- It can attract media attention and international support.
- It helps unite Ethiopians both inside the country and in the diaspora.
- Even if the right is not always respected in practice, the more signatures and the more consistent we are, the harder it becomes for those in power to ignore us.
Although Article 30 guarantees us the right to petition, the reality in Ethiopia shows that this right is not always respected. That is exactly why we must use it actively and courageously. The more Ethiopians raise their voices together, the harder it becomes for those in power to ignore our demands.
